Russia has designed the first gas-powered icebreaker

The Baltsudoproekt Central Design Bureau has developed a technical design for an icebreaker which will be able to run on two types of fuel - diesel and gas. The capacity of the vessel will amount to 13 MW.

According to the mass media, the new transport was given the design number 23620. The icebreaker was designed by the order of the Rosmorport.

Currently, there is only one operating natural gas-powered icebreaker in the world. I'm referring to the Polaris, a Finnish-made vessel.

The uniqueness of the Russian project is that the ship will be the first Russian icebreaker with the main power plant running on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and the world's first LNG-powered icebreaker with Dynamic Positioning System Class 2 (DYNPOS-2).

It will be over 95 meters long and 22.5 meters wide. The speed will reach 16 knots. The icebreaker is designed for a crew of 22.

The new transport will be of Icebreaker7 ice class.
