Construction of a new nuclear-powered icebreaker started in Russia

The first cutting of metal for the construction of a heavy-duty nuclear-powered icebreaker took place on Monday at the shipyard in the town of Bolshoi Kamen in Primorsky Krai. The question is about the Project 10510 vessel Lider, which will be built for the state corporation Rosatom.

Under the contract, the icebreaker is to be put into operation in 2027.

According to Mustafa Kashka, Atomflot Director General, by the traditions of the nuclear icebreaker fleet ships are named after geographic locations, but the new icebreaker will be unique. Also, according to him, the Project 10510 vessel will be able to provide pilotage in the eastern region of the Arctic throughout the year due to its technical features.

The contract for the vessel construction was signed between Atomflot and "Zvezda" shipbuilding complex (SSK) in spring of this year.

The icebreaker is to be constructed according to the technical design of central design bureau "Aisberg". It will be equipped with nuclear power plant RITM-400, designed by Afrikantov Experimental Design Bureau of Machine Building (a part of Rosatom).

The main features of the ship under construction include 120 MW shaft power and a cruising speed of 22 knots on clear water. The icebreaker will be 209 metres long and almost 48 metres wide.

The power plant will consist of a nuclear power plant with two RITM-400-type reactors, a steam-turbine plant with four turbine generators, and an electric propulsion system with four propulsion motors.
