Rosselkhoznadzor to control food exports

The Ministry of Agriculture of the Russian Federation has taken the initiative to legislate the right of Rosselkhoznadzor to exercise veterinary control over animal products which are sent abroad.

The World Trade Organization requires foreign suppliers of such goods to guarantee safety. The "Rossiyskaya Gazeta" newspaper notes that to make the consumer confident in the quality of their products, manufacturers may confirm the safety of goods to the veterinary services of importing countries.

However, the relevant Russian authority believes that this in a large number of cases prolongs the negotiations. The problem, according to the Ministry, may be solved by giving such a function to Rosselkhoznadzor. In this case experts of the agency will be able to study and process intended for export products of animal origin, to monitor their transportation, to control over handling and storage conditions and in general to inspect exporters at all stages of their work.

According to the explanatory note to the draft document, in case of adoption of the law, the control system will ensure the growth of export potential of the domestic companies and enable them to promote products abroad without hindrance.

Since the beginning of the year Russia exported about $12 bln worth of food, which is expected to reach at least $25 bln by the end of the year.
