Bayer refuses to transfer genetic materials to Russian companies

Bayer is not yet able to transfer agricultural plant germplasm to Russian agrarians as part of technology transfer, as there is currently no regulatory framework for this. This was announced by the deputy head of the Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS), Pavel Zaborshchikov.

As a reminder, in the autumn of 2016 Bayer agreed to purchase the American producer of herbicides and seeds Monsanto for $66 billion. The Russian FAS approved the deal, putting forward a requirement for technology transfer in our country in the field of seed breeding and digital farming.

Two years later, FAS together with the Higher School of Economics and Bayer Concern opened the Technology Transfer Center (TTC) to transfer such technologies to agro-industrial companies in Russia.

In mid-autumn 2019, it became known that the Center had already selected the first seven companies that will receive germoplasm of agricultural plants from Bayer.

According to Zaborshchikov, it has not yet been approved how the company will transfer the germoplasm to domestic companies for scientific experiments, RIA Novosti writes. According to him, once the necessary legal acts are signed and come into force, there will be a breakthrough and everything will be much more productive.

The deputy head of the department also noted that previously there had been no similar precedents in Russian practice, and therefore there was no need to develop such rules and regulations.
