Russia cut food imports by more than 30%

Over the six years of the food embargo, Russia has reduced food imports by a third. This is evidenced by the data of the country's Ministry of Agriculture.

Thus, in 2013, the Russian Federation bought abroad $43.3 billion worth of products and agricultural products. Last year, the volume of purchases decreased to $30 billion.

The Ministry called the results of pork imports a breakthrough - during this period, imports of meat decreased 10-fold, from $2.6 billion to $270 million. Now Russia produces more such meat than the population consumes. In addition, imports of beef decreased from $3.2 billion in 2013 to $1.3 billion last year.

Imports of the most popular vegetable in Russia, tomato, have also decreased significantly. While in 2013 the country purchased $1.1 billion worth of tomatoes from foreign suppliers, this figure has dropped by more than 42% to $639 million in six years. Also during this period, many new orchards appeared in our country, which led to a reduction in the share of imports of apples and pears by half, namely from $1.2 billion to $586 million.

At the same time Russia reached a new level of supply of its own food abroad. Thus, for the first time in this period export revenues exceeded revenues from arms sales outside the country. Last year, agricultural producers earned nearly $26bn on the global market, up 1.5 times from the same figure in 2013, when the revenue was around $17bn.
