Ministry of Education and Science considers possible capture of Russian wheat market due to Bayer project

The Ministry of Education and Science has seen risks of capturing the market of domestic wheat, the only crop in the Russian Federation that currently fully provides itself with sowing material.

This may happen in case breeding companies from Russia sign license agreements with the global giant Bayer, which will transfer wheat germplasm on a free-of-charge basis, Izvestia writes.

However, after that, according to the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), agrarians will have to pay royalties from the sale of seeds and open their own know-how to the foreign holding.

At the same time, Bayer and the Technology Transfer Center denied claims that foreign scientists will get hold of secret technologies of Russian breeders. Also, according to the media, it is not difficult to lose the first place in sales of wheat, if they do not keep up with the progress.

Furthermore, the Russian Federal Antimonopoly Service earlier reported that recipients of genetic material from Bayer will not pay royalties on sales to the foreign company.
