Russian scientists have improved the technology of ceramic parts manufacturing

Scientists from the Moscow Institute of Steel and Alloys have improved the technology for creating ceramic parts made of silicon carbide for mechanical engineering.

The use of the new material will significantly improve the performance of car engines, aircraft and other machinery.

Today, silicon carbide is often used in various industrial applications as a semiconductor, construction material and abrasive.

Such ceramics are well able to withstand enormous compressive pressures. However, as scientists themselves said, the material is very sensitive to structural defects and therefore has a low tensile strength and bending. In addition, silicon carbide has low resistance to cracking, which also affects the breadth of its use.

According to one of the authors Stepan Vorotylo, such ceramics can be a good alternative to the alloys, which are scarce cobalt, nickel and chromium. Using the material in production of turbine blades and internal combustion engine parts will increase engines working temperatures and improve power, tractive power, efficiency and environmental friendliness.

Experts have improved the quality of the material by forming reinforcing nanofibers using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis technology.

In the future, scientists intend to continue their work to increase the fracture resistance and durability of the material.
