Organic agro-export stopped in Russia

Russian exporters of organic products found themselves in a difficult situation, due to which they were forced to suspend the supply of their own products outside the country, the media reported.

In order to sell their products abroad, they, according to the rules of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Supervision (Rosselkhoznadzor), are required to conduct chemical disinfection, including tomatoes, daddies and peppers. However, products that have undergone fumigation are no longer considered organic in Europe.

According to Oleg Mironenko, the Executive Director of the National Organic Union, the service has suspended the issuance of phytosanitary certificates to suppliers who do not comply with the law "On Plant Quarantine".

He noted that this led to a contradiction that cannot be solved, because the requirement of mandatory disinfection by special vapors or gases applies to all exported plant products, there is no exception for organics.

In this regard, the Union sent a letter to the head of Rosselkhoznadzor Sergey Dankvert, where he asked to change the norms and allow not to carry out such treatment. The head of the service has not yet responded officially, but the press service said that the agency plans to discuss the issue with the market players, the media reports.
