New requirements for additive materials have been implemented in Russia

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping has introduced requirements for additive manufacturing products used in shipbuilding.

The amendments are made to the rules for classification and construction of sea-going ships in the section "Materials".

The new requirements refer also to semi-finished and finished products which are manufactured by methods of additive synthesis from metal materials.

The new circular clarifies the general approval procedure, scope and test methods for additive products. In addition it defines the procedure for manufacturers to be recognized by the register and the scope of the certificate that is issued after the corresponding certification.

According to Maxim Yurkov, senior expert of Hull and Marine Structures Department, prior to development of the requirements there was conducted a long research work with Scientific Research Centre Kurchatov Institute which is one of the leading interdisciplinary material science centres.

During the research, experts grew material samples from several grades of steel and titanium alloys using 3D printing.
