"SLT has developed a project on modernization of gas cleaning of furnaces at the shop of Kazakhstan Mining and Metallurgical Company Kazzinkmash

In 2018, Russian engineering company Modern Foundry Technologies (SLT) carried out development of design and working documentation for the project "Organization of gas purification from two existing furnaces in the steelmaking shop of PK Kazzinkmash, one of the leaders in non-ferrous metallurgy of Kazakhstan.

"In the process of any metallurgical production a large volume of various gases is emitted, many of which are harmful. Gas cleaning serves to catch these substances, so that they do not exceed the maximum permissible concentration. In real life, the exhaust air not only contains gaseous undesirable components but also dust and the tiniest liquid particles. Therefore, industrial gas cleaning plants use different methods to remove them. The air is filtered through a filter system in sequence to remove the harmful components one after the other and only then released into the atmosphere. The separated impurities are disposed of," explained the SLT representative.

The 2018 project, which was prepared by the SLT specialists, envisages the use of filters, the action of which is based on flowing around the bag filters with a sufficiently large amount of polluted air. In doing so, particles of dust and soot contaminants remain on the surface of the filters, which can be made on both woven and non-woven basis.

The designers of "SLT" have chosen these filters, because they provide purification of air with residual dust content not exceeding 10 mg/norm. m3 with their rather compact dimensions. Due to such design a large filtering surface is placed in the available volume. In addition, the flow of the purified gas in the filter is from top to bottom - this facilitates removal of dust moving in the downstream flow and allows the unit to operate effectively at gas dust levels up to 300 g/norm m3.

"Gas cleaning contributes to a favorable environmental situation not only at the plant itself, but also in nearby communities and on the planet as a whole. Design documentation of gas cleaning system has passed an expert review, the project is approved for implementation. The foundation has already been prepared for the equipment, and the installation is about to begin," the company's representative added.

At the same time, in 2019, SLT and Kazzinc LLP signed a contract to supply, supervise installation and commissioning of a flat-coil dust and gas purification filter for two more existing furnaces in the steelmaking shop.

The new filters will be placed outside the building - this technical solution will simplify their installation and maintenance. The unit itself will purify up to 110,000 cubic metres of waste gases per hour. With an annual operating time of 8,000 hours, the volume of purified air will reach 880 million cubic metres.

First joint project

Cooperation between the companies began in 2018, when SLT specialists developed the design and working documentation for the project "Installation of DSP-6 steelmaking furnace" for Kazzinc.

Arc furnaces (EAFs) are widely used in metallurgy for mass melting of high-quality steels and alloys. They occupy leading place among electric steelmaking units in terms of total metal output.

The main purpose of arc furnaces is production of steel from scrap. As the share of recycled metal is steadily increasing in the modern environment, electric arc furnaces are becoming more and more in demand. Smelting in an electric arc furnace produces high quality alloyed steel and superheated steel for shaped castings that cannot be done in an open-hearth furnace. Nowadays low-alloyed steels are also produced in powerful arc furnaces and in this case CPB adapts to the nature of the scrap better than other furnaces, which makes the smelting technology more flexible.

"The project has been positively evaluated by experts and is currently being implemented - the foundations have been completed and the furnace is being assembled. After commissioning, it will be able to smelt up to 6 tons of metal in a single heat, which is the optimum volume for small-scale production, "- concluded the representative of SLT.
