Ogonek Scientific and Production Center created devices for orthopedic correction of disorders in children with cerebral palsy and spinal dysraphism

One of the leading Russian rehabilitation industry companies Ogonek Research and Production Centre released another significant in-house development - a line of orthopedic biomechanical rotational-corrective devices for hips, lower extremities, lower extremities and torso, which have no analogues in the world.

"The devices are designed for rehabilitation of children suffering from infantile cerebral palsy and spinal dysraphism. Moreover, for the latter it is the only device that makes it possible for them to get up from a wheelchair, learn walking skills and lead a normal life. The design of the apparatus, in spite of its complexity, is light and convenient for daily use and practically does not limit the movements of a child in sitting, standing and walking poses, which, certainly, expands possibilities of rehabilitation treatment of patients with spastic paralysis, increases their rehabilitation potential and improves the quality of their life", - said the company representative.

Device Features

Each device of this line is a modular construction, which has anthropometric matching of the size of the elements. The devices are intended to treat children aged from the first months of life to 14-15 years suffering from spastic or paralytic subluxation of the hip or with adductor position of the hip caused by pathology of the muscle tone which is found in 40-50% of children with cerebral palsy and almost all children with myelodysplasia.

The most important advantage and option of all modifications of the device is an adjustable correction of the position of the patient's femoral head in the acetabulum, which preserves the possibility of active movements in the hip joint in three planes within given volumes. In this regard, the use of such an orthosis can be an alternative to the staged cast method in most cases.

An equally important function of these orthoses is that their use allows rehabilitation therapists to simultaneously use effective loading kinesiotherapy methods for treating children. It is possible thanks to the fact that they offset the negative effects of axial forces on hip joints of young patients.

Effectiveness of Use

Long-term use of this type of apparatus - usually more than one year - helps to reduce pathological muscle tone of the adductors of the hip and corrects the imbalance of forces in the hip joint. Abduction of the right or left hip in this case is isolated, almost without mutual influence, which distinguishes the biomechanical rotator-corrector device from the abduction splints of Vilensky type.

In addition, when a child performs stepping movements and static postures (standing and sitting), different degrees of hip abduction are achieved. Thus, in sitting posture, the abduction of the thigh is maximal, while in stepping and standing postures, the degree of abduction is optimal to correct the position of the femoral head and does not prevent the upright posture. Thus, gradual orthopedic correction is carried out in children with cerebral palsy and spinal dysraphism, which allows them, with an early start of rehabilitation measures, by the age of 6-7 years to move freely enough, go to school, communicate with peers and feel like full members of society.

The company notes that there are no analogues of such orthoses in the world, that is why currently Ogonek SPC begins to export these products to the near abroad and far abroad countries.

Orthopedic products of Ogonyok Scientific and Production Center

At present range of orthopedic products developed in the Centre and produced under Ogonyok brand consists of 100 items. These are straps, corsets, posture correctors, spinal insoles, complex orthopedic systems and apparatus. Most products are made of special material - elastic fabric "Tricor" ®, developed in Scientific and Production Center Ogonek specifically for the production of orthoses.

About the Company

Scientific and manufacturing centre Ogonyok established in 1987 is currently one of the leading Russian rehabilitation industry enterprises uniting within a microcluster a production base, scientific and methodical centre, rehabilitation centre, network of orthopedic shops.

The list of the company's services includes: production of a wide range of orthopedic products; development of rehabilitation technologies, hardware and software and technical means for their implementation; and rehabilitation of patients with diseases of the nervous system and musculoskeletal system.

Besides, during all the years of its existence RPC "Ogonek" has been carrying out scientific and practical work aimed at creation of new samples of medical and rehabilitation equipment.
