Russian wine will rise in price, Russian Union of Wine Producers said

The rise in the cost of wine in Russia is inevitable, we need to prepare for it in the coming months, said the head of the Union of Winegrowers and Winemakers of Russia Leonid Popovich.

The new law, which requires making Russian wine exclusively from domestic wine material, has prompted a reshuffle, he explained.

Wineries, which used to buy materials for wine, have now started to buy raw materials from local grapes in order to fill their production capacities.

This has led to double the price of wine berries. The wine made from this year's harvest, which will be available to buyers in 2021, will be more expensive. As Popovich explained, the rise in prices is associated not only with the cost of raw materials, but also with a shortage of products in the networks, because the latter, he said, "do not know how to sell small batch wine" and small producers "have not learned how to establish relationships with retail chains".

In the summer of 2020 a law came into force in Russia, according to which only wine made from grapes grown in the Russian Federation may be called Russian wine.
