Russia releases cybersecurity guidelines for maritime vessels

The Russian Maritime Register of Shipping has published cybersecurity guidelines on its website, which will take effect on January 1.

The regulation prescribes guidelines for design, manufacture, maintenance and testing of ship computerized systems. They will be used during design and construction of ships to be contracted from the moment the guidelines come into force.

The document was created by a special working group consisting of the experts of Gazpromflot, Sovkomflot, Kronshtadt-Technology, Navis and other companies. Suggestions from ship systems developers and shipping companies were also taken into account during development.

The guidelines were created in order to reduce vulnerability to cyber attacks and malicious software and at the same time to increase safety of navigation, said Vladimir Vikulin, head of the working group on cyber security.
