Greenhouse gas emission quotas will be sold in Russia

An experiment on selling greenhouse gas emission quotas will be conducted on Sakhalin, the website of the Ministry of Industry and Trade of the Russian Federation informs.

Now the European system of trading in quotas is the largest in Europe, estimated at more than 51 billion euros a year.

Deputy Prime Minister for the Environment Victoria Abramchenko has instructed to conduct an experiment on trading carbon units, or greenhouse gas emissions on Sakhalin.

For the first time in the country it is planned to create such a trading system and ensure that the region will be carbon-neutral by 2025.

This will be followed by a regional inventory of greenhouse gas emissions and removals, and the creation of an infrastructure to support climate projects. In addition, after the experiment should form a regional system for trading greenhouse gas emissions and integrate it with international trading systems.

The authorities expect that investors in green projects and companies that want to increase the ambition of their climate action will take part in the experiment.
