Northern Sea Route freight traffic increased by 8.3% in January

The volume of cargo transported along the Northern Sea Route in January amounted to 2.6 million tons, an 8.3% increase compared to the same period in 2020, said the administration of the route.

Now the waters here are covered with cohesive annual ice, on the recommended tracks in the Gulf of Ob and on the approaches to it - hummocks up to 3-4 points, fields of smog, and the captains of the ships at the same time told about the periodic compression of the ice. Iceberg threat exists near Zhelaniya Cape and on the approaches to the Boris Vilkitsky Strait.

Icebreakers Andrey Vilkitsky and Alexander Sannikov ensured safe navigation at the Arctic oil offloading terminal of the Novoportovskoye field "Gateway of the Arctic". In January, five foreign vessels received permission to navigate the waterways of the route.
