Austrian Chancellor says willingness to vaccinate with Russian or Chinese vaccine

Austrian Chancellor Sebastian Kurz stated his readiness to vaccinate with Russian or Chinese vaccine against coronavirus infection, if they are registered in Europe.

He noted that the conversation about vaccination is purely about "efficiency, safety and rapid availability, not geopolitical battles," he told Welt am Sonntag.

Kurz also criticized the bureaucratic and slow work the European Medicines Agency is now doing to allow other drugs.

Austria, he said, is ready to start production of Russian and Chinese vaccines if they are registered by the European Medicines Agency.

The country, Kurtz said, would try to provide production facilities of suitable national companies to make vaccines from China or Russia. "As in the case of manufacturers from other countries," he added.

The chancellor also stressed that, first and foremost, it is important to get a safer vaccine as soon as possible - regardless of who developed it.

Vaccination against COVID 2019 began in Austria in December. The country is using products from Pfizer, BioNTech and Moderna. Further supplies are expected from AstraZeneca.
