Tatarstan will start producing plastic from wheat

In Tatarstan the start-up works at the Cleapl enterprise, where it is planned to launch the production of biodegradable tubes that can be eaten after use, have been completed.

The co-founder of the company, candidate of technical sciences Ivan Zakharov, was engaged in the development of the tubes. He has been dealing with the problem of plastic garbage accumulation on the planet since his youth, so he decided to create alternative products from plant-based raw materials.

"Cleapl was given the opportunity as one of 150 start-ups from around the world to present their developments at Expo 2020 in Dubai. We received funds from the United Arab Emirates for renting premises, purchasing and installing equipment. We will produce tubes from wheat, more precisely from wheat flour obtained from flour mills," he said.

At the moment, according to the information of the Ministry of Agriculture of the Republic, annually about 200 thousand tons of wheat and rye flour is produced here. This amount is enough to start uninterrupted production.

Straw, potato and vegetable waste can also be used as raw materials for disposable tableware and bags.

As Zakharov said, now the question is about financing. For instance the production of biodegradable cups requires USD 1 million investment. At the same time, he said, he already has an order for 1.8 million cups a month.
