Kazan scientists raised a Colorado potato beetle eater

Scientists from a Kazan laboratory have grown an insect that feeds on the Colorado potato beetle, according to the website of Tatarstan 24 TV channel.

The insect, which the scientists gave the name Padisius, resembles a cockroach and a carpenter beetle. At the moment the number of individuals is 1,5 thousand.

Scientists believe that the use of the insect as a method of crop pest control will allow to grow potatoes without pesticides.

They told us that Padisius is a very capricious insect, as the individuals like humid and warm environment. For him, plus 18 degrees can be a critical point: the beetle in such conditions, becoming passive and ceases to destroy pests.

The Rosselkhoztsentr of Tatarstan expects that in a few years the Colorado potato beetle will be combatted with the Padisius. Due to this, the chemical poisons will be completely eliminated.
