The end of the coronavirus pandemic can be expected by 2022, Hans Kluge, head of the World Health Organization (WHO) Europe, told Welt.

He explained that such judgments are based on the fact that this year will be another year of COVID, but already "more predictable and manageable". He called last year "terra incognita, the scientific and political unknown". Now the situation has changed - tools, diagnostic programs and a vaccine are available.

Kluge said he expects the pandemic to be over by early next year. However, he added, this does not mean that the virus will disappear.

"However, hopefully no interventions will be needed by then," the WHO official said.
