The largest neutrino telescope in the Northern Hemisphere is put into operation at Baikal

The largest in the Northern Hemisphere deep-water neutrino telescope Baikal-GVD has been put into operation in Baikal.

It will detect sources of ultra-high energy neutrinos, and with its help specialists will study the evolution of galaxies and the Universe.

According to Minister of Science and Higher Education of Russia Valery Falkov, the new unit may help in solving scientific problems in various discoveries and processing of the collected information. For example, scientists expect to find out how the Universe is organised and learn the history of the galaxy's origin.

It will also become a driver of scientific development in the region, because now young people often move to big cities. Now, according to the minister, young people will have an incentive to develop in their home country, as they will be able to participate in scientific research and engineering works at the advanced level and make discoveries.

Approximately 2.5 billion roubles have been invested in the project. The plant itself is located on an area of about half a square kilometre, and it will continue to be developed and supplemented. If the world does not build new large telescopes by 2030, the Baikal facility will be the largest on the planet.
