Sheep breeding will receive state support

Russia plans to create a targeted program to support sheep breeding.

According to Agriculture Minister Dmitry Patrushev, the issue was discussed at a departmental meeting in Mineralnye Vody, writes the national agrarian agency.

He reminded that today North Caucasus produces over 25% of the country's mutton. This industry is of special importance in the region. The agency hopes that the production will only increase.

Earlier a similar idea was expressed by the Minister of Economic Development Maxim Reshetnikov. He stressed that in the North Caucasus it is necessary to develop agricultural cooperation and state support of the traditional directions of economy, such as sheep breeding, and especially - processing of lamb. According to him, on average there is 63 kopecks of processing of agricultural products per one rouble of agricultural output in Russia, and only 21 kopecks in Caucasus.

There are over 1.2 billion sheep in the world. Leaders of the industry are China (about 140 million sheep), Australia (100 million), New Zealand (50), Great Britain (40), India, Sudan and South Africa (30 each).
