Exporters' revenues increased by 20% due to the ban on exports of round timber from Russia

Revenue of companies from export of unprocessed wood increased by 20.3% in the first half of 2021, reaching 537 million rubles, according to RBC, referring to the data of Roslesinforg. Growth of incomes of the companies is observed at a background of news about an interdiction of export of not processed wood from Russia since January, 1st, 2022.

It is specified that the export of roundwood in physical terms increased by 12.6% amounting to 7.18 million cubic meters. At the same time, Roslesinforg states that the increase in wood prices by 6.8% up to $71.4 per cubic meter also had an effect on the proceeds.

According to the Forest Sector Development Strategy by 2030 Russian authorities want to increase the contribution of the forest industry to the country's economy and the country's share in the world market of forest products. One of the primary goals is to shift the domestic timber industry from the export of roundwood to high-level processing of timber products. For this purpose, President Vladimir Putin imposed a ban on the export of unprocessed and coarsely processed coniferous and valuable hardwoods starting from January 1, 2022.

Government officials say that small and medium-sized timber companies that are shifting from the export of round timber to deep processing of wood can count on government support. In particular, the Ministry of Industry and Trade announced a new support program "Projects of forest industry", which is aimed at modernization of production facilities and creation of facilities for deep processing of wood.
