Production of lithium-ion batteries will open in Kaliningrad region

Renera (part of Rosatom's fuel company TVEL) and the government of the Kaliningrad Region signed an agreement to open production of lithium-ion battery cells and energy storage systems. They will be used in electric buses, electric cars, special-purpose vehicles and uninterruptible power supply and energy balancing systems.

"The plant for production of lithium-ion cells and energy storage systems - the "Russian Gigafactory" - will start operating at the Baltic NPP site already in 2026. Construction of the facility will contribute to development of this industrial site," the company's press service said.

President of TVEL Natalya Nikipelova noted that the plant's products will be in demand mainly by domestic car manufacturers, while at the same time the appearance of the facility will make a significant contribution to implementation of the state policy in the area of import substitution.

"The signals we are receiving from the Russian market show that the production volumes we planned a year ago may prove insufficient. In order to implement current plans on development of electric transport, we are considering a scenario of possible growth of plant's production capacity up to 12 GWh", - said General Director of "Renera" Emin Askerov.

The implementation of the project will give a powerful impetus to the socio-economic development of remote areas of the Kaliningrad region, said Governor Anton Alikhanov.

"The preliminary demand for personnel at the new plant is estimated at two thousand people, which means the prospect of a serious increase in the population of our eastern municipalities, construction of housing and infrastructure," he noted.

The energy storage systems are an end-to-end technology in the non-nuclear product portfolio of ROSATOM which allows the creation of high-tech products.
