"Rusal and Budweiser will start producing cans with a low carbon footprint

Russian aluminium company Rusal, together with Budweiser Brewing Group, global aluminium can maker Canpack and aluminium rolling expert Elval, will launch a pilot project to produce beer cans with a low carbon footprint, according to the En+ Group website.

The project will produce five million 440-milliliter Budweiser cans from low-carbon aluminum. The metal will be produced using inert anode technology using renewable energy. Drinks in such containers will be available in stores in the UK as early as this autumn.

"The cans will be produced by Canpack UK using renewable electricity and from aluminium coils from ELVAL's rolling division, ElvalHalcor," it said.

The metal was obtained by replacing standard primary aluminium with Allow Inerta brand aluminium (a metal that Rusal produces using advanced inert anode technology). This technology makes it possible to reduce aluminum's carbon footprint to levels unprecedented in the industry.

"The production of metal using this technology uses renewable energy sources and the emissions are only one thousandth of the current industry average," the company specified.
