Media: Russian restaurateurs face problem with octopus supply

Representatives of Russian restaurants specializing in dishes with seafood said that the supply of octopus was disrupted, Kommersant has learned.

This was stated to the publication by the founder of Meat & Fish Sergey Mironov, co-owner of the restaurant holding Tigris Henrik Winter, founder of Restart Vasilchuk Brothers Alexey Vasilchuk, as well as representatives of Moremania and Rakovaya. According to the restaurateurs, the situation with a shortage of seafood is used by suppliers, who overprice. For example, 1 kilogram of octopus from Indonesia in the spring was worth 500 rubles, while today it costs at least 1.5 thousand rubles. Suppliers from Morocco have even raised the price to 2 thousand rubles per kilogram, they said.

The information on the deficit of big octopus, which is mainly bought by restaurateurs, was confirmed by Artem Lomize, the vice-president of the Association of Industrial and Commercial Enterprises of the Fish Market. According to him, there are problems with octopus in the whole world market. This is due to a sharp decrease of octopus catch by 30-40% in Morocco and Mauritania. The reason is the reduction in the number of vessels in the industry, the reduction of catch quotas, as well as the closure of borders between producing and processing countries, he explained.

Co-owner of Tigris noticed that Morocco has a seasonal production ban, while Indonesia is experiencing unfavorable weather conditions for catches.

According to Julia Guzeva, the head of HoReCa of the big seafood supplier La Mare, the supply problems resulted from the transport collapse in the Suez Canal. According to her all supply chains have been disrupted. The situation may stabilize in a couple of weeks, she said.
