Russian government to discuss ban on commercial catch of whales and dolphins

The Russian government intends to discuss at Wednesday's meeting amendments to the federal law on fisheries and conservation of aquatic biological resources, which could prohibit the commercial catch of whales and dolphins.

"The draft law provides for the prohibition of commercial and coastal fishing of whales, dolphins and porpoises," according to the materials of the Cabinet of Ministers' press service for the upcoming meeting.

Since September 20, Russia has imposed a temporary ban on the export of whales, dolphins and porpoises from Russia to countries that are not members of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU). The restrictions will last for 180 days. The main purpose of this decision was an attempt to protect the population of marine mammals, which are in high demand abroad.

The establishment of a permanent ban on the export of cetaceans outside the customs territory of the EEU is also planned to be worked out at the level of the organisation.
