Russia and the Swedish commune discuss opportunities for cooperation in the Arctic

Alexander Abramov, Russian trade representative in Sweden, met with the head of the economic department of the Swedish municipality of Haparanda, the general director of the food company Polarica and a representative of the Heart of Lapland travel company.

The trade mission told that possible ways of cooperation in the economic sphere and establishment of interregional cooperation in the Arctic region as well as potential of cooperation between Haparanda and the Murmansk region were discussed during the conversation.

The parties informed about mutual interest to continue the dialogue and agreed to keep in touch.

At the invitation of Swedish colleagues the delegation of the trade mission visited the potato processing plant of the Outinens company in the suburbs of Haparanda and looked at the local railway transport junction.

Besides, the parties discussed logistic possibilities of Haparanda to increase cargo delivery from Russia against the background of the decision made in Finland to electrify the last section of the railroad up to the border with Sweden.

The municipality of Haparanda is situated in the subarctic part of the northern region of Norrbotten on the Swedish-Finnish border. Now the municipality wants to make Haparanda a major logistics hub in Northern Europe.

The prerequisites for this, according to the authorities of the region, are the border location of the commune, the proximity of four airports and five deep-water ports, as well as the connection of the largest city railway station to the Swedish and Finnish railroads, which have Western European and Russian gauge. According to the municipality, this will allow redirecting some cargo flows from Asia and Russia to the city.
