First unmanned cabs will hit Moscow roads in February

The Russian government has resolved disagreements over a draft program of experimental legal regime (EPR) for the launch of unmanned cabs. It will be published in January, and as early as February the experiment with unmanned cabs could take place in Moscow, Vedomosti learned.

Yandex.Tests, a subsidiary of Yandex, has become the subject of the EPR. Responsibility for controlling the experiment is divided between the Interior Ministry, Rostransnadzor and regional authorities.

According to the latest version of the program, unmanned cars with a test driver in the cabin will be able to drive on 18 streets of Moscow, on the territory of Skolkovo, Innopolis and the center "Sirius" in the Krasnodar Territory. Yulia Shveyko, a representative of Yandex, confirmed that the service of ordering an unmanned cab through the application "Yandex Go" is planned to be launched in early 2022 after receiving official permission. In the first stage, the cabs will run between the predetermined points of landing and drop-off in Yasenevo. The price will be the same as for a regular cab. At the same time to ride on the drone will be able to users who have left an application to participate in the test - now the applications have been received from 10 thousand people.

According to Olga Barinova, the representative of the Secretariat of the Deputy Prime Minister Dmitry Chernyshenko, the unmanned cabs will run in Skolkovo and Innopolis without a person, while in the other areas the presence of an engineer will be required. He will have to monitor the situation and take control if necessary.

The first tests of unmanned cabs were conducted by Yandex back in 2018 in Innopolis. As clarified in the company, during this time, users of the service made more than 20 thousand trips, drones drove more than 14 million kilometers on public roads not only in Russia, but also in the United States and Israel.
