The harvest of greenhouse cucumbers and tomatoes in 2021 broke a record

Last year Russia renewed the record for the harvest of vegetables in winter greenhouses: in 2021 it exceeded 1.4 million tons, said the Ministry of Agriculture of Russia.

"Last year, the harvest in winter greenhouses renewed the record of 2020 - received more than 1.4 million tons of products; including the production of cucumbers amounted to at least 830 thousand tons, and tomatoes - 590 thousand tons," the ministry said.

Volumes have increased primarily due to the commissioning of new facilities and the modernization of existing enterprises, according to the department. So, for the year the total area of enterprises has increased by 6% and amounted to 3.2 thousand hectares.

In addition, the use of high-yield varieties and modern technologies contributes to higher yields. For example, the most modern greenhouses of the fifth generation, the yield can reach about a hundred kilograms per square meter for tomatoes and over 160 kilograms per square meter - cucumbers, the Ministry of Agriculture said.

Leaders among regions were Lipetsk, Moscow, Kaluga, Volgograd, Novosibirsk, Saratov and Chelyabinsk regions, as well as Krasnodar, Stavropol, Bashkortostan, Tatarstan and Karachay-Cherkess Republic.

"They account for more than 60% of total production in the country," the press service added.

The department forecasts that by 2025, the volume of greenhouse vegetable production will be at least 1.6 million tons.
