Disney will shoot a movie based on Russian fairy tales

35

The Russian branch of Disney Corporation will shoot the second full-length film for wide distribution on the material of Russian fairy tales. The title of the project is already known - "The Last Bogatyr". Its release is scheduled for October 19, 2017, specifies "Kommersant".

The first attempt to shoot a movie based on such material was the fairy tale "Book of Masters", which Disney released in 2009. The company at that time invested about $7 million in the project.

The tape collected $10.8 million in distribution, which is a good indicator, but not enough to recoup the investment. Nevertheless, the project was sold in a number of countries around the world, however, mainly for televisions. Since then, the studio has decided not to produce three such films a year and so far has hardly been involved in local film production. The company shot the TV series "After School", especially for Channel One, and the charity film almanac "Happiness is...", while it was free in cinemas.

Shooting "The Last Bogatyr" Disney will be conducted jointly with the company Yellow, Black & White, which is the creator of the series "Kitchen" and film projects "Kitchen in Paris", "Without Borders", "Wonderland" and "Superbobroves". These films, with the exception of Cuisine in Paris, were produced in Russian cinemas with the support of the Disney WDSSPR film distribution division, according to the "Film Exhibitor's Bulletin".

The partners intend to make "The Last Bogatyr" a spectacular and large-scale fairy tale, so they are now negotiating with IMAX to release the film in this format. If they are successful, it will be the second Russian film IMAX 2017 after "Attraction", filmed by Fyodor Bondarchuk.

General Director of Disney in Russia Marina Zhigalova-Ozkan notes that the project will be saturated with special effects. General Producer of Yellow, Black & White Eduard Iloyan calls the project "strategic":

"We want to continue the tradition of screening Russian fairy tales started by great directors Alexander Rowe and Alexander Ptushko", she adds. "This is a unique opportunity for our industry to work with one of the largest studios in the world and make a product that is interesting not only in Russia, but also abroad. We expect the film to be the main film event of next year," "Kommersant" quotes Iloyan.

In the story of the film, Ivan, the winner of a TV show about magicians and psychics, gets from the modern world to the "universe of Russian fairy tales," where he is mistaken for a descendant of Ilya Muromts, says Iloyan. The project will be directed by Dmitry Dyachenko ("Kitchen", "Radio Day", "What Men Talk About"), the main role will play Victor Khorynyak ("Kitchen"), the key characters - Konstantin Lavronenko, Elena Yakovleva, Catherine Vilkova, Sergei Burunov, Evgeny Dyatlov and others.
