Latvian gas company Latvijas Gaze has resumed the purchase of Russian gas.

"Latvijas gāze is buying gas now, but we are not buying gas from Gazprom because we cannot pay off Gazprom. We have another supplier," the media quoted the head of the company Aigars Kalvitis.

He did not specify who is the intermediary.

Earlier, Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a decree according to which, from April 1, settlements with countries that joined the sanctions for Russian gas supplies should be converted into rubles. Some EU countries opposed such a scheme, noting that the change of the settlement currency is not provided for in their contracts with Gazprom. A number of them, including Latvia, refused to purchase.
