The historic convict prison began to be preserved near Irkutsk

Near Irkutsk, conservation work has begun in the historic building of the former convict prison – Alexander Central. As part of the work, the roof will be repaired and the window openings will be closed. This is reported by the press service of the government of the Irkutsk region. 2.4 million rubles have been allocated from the regional budget for priority emergency response work.

"In the historical and architectural complex "Alexandrovsky Central", located in the Bokhansky district of the Irkutsk region, priority emergency work has begun. The specialists of the contractor company will repair the roof, make a protective window closure, remove and take out the garbage. The work will be completed in December. Thus, the historical and architectural complex "Alexandrovsky Central" will be preserved until the way of its further use is determined," the message says.

The building dates back to the 18th century. Initially, in 1757, a distillery was opened in it. And since 1873, the Alexander Central Convict Prison was located there. In 1956, it was converted into a psychiatric hospital.

In 2016, it was disbanded and the dilapidated building, which is a cultural heritage site, stands abandoned.
