Russia will start growing its own almonds

Next year farmers of Stavropol Territory will plant the region's first almond orchard.

The regional Ministry of Agriculture hopes that starting in 2024 they will be able to provide almonds not only to the population of the region, but also to sell them all over Russia and export them abroad.

Today, all the almonds that are on the shelves in Russia are imported.

Last year, during the All-Russian agroindustrial exhibition, local growers presented their first planting material and almond nuts. In the future the region will produce about 100 thousand almond seedlings annually.

The Stavropol regional authorities have also provided funding for the project. Agrarians got over 760 million rubles for almond growing this year, twice as much in comparison with the sums allocated last year. More than 240 million rubles of this money are allocated from the regional budget.

These funds will be used to plant and take care of mature and young trees, to develop super-intensive gardens, to plant and look after berries, to grow planting material. There will also be bought equipment for irrigation systems. Compensation of expenses of the farmers, who expand and modernize their production, will be about 1 million rubles per hectare.

We remind you that in recent years the total area of fruit and berry plantations on agricultural holdings and farms has grown by 26%, up to 5,8 thousand hectares. This year, the acreage will increase by another 900 hectares.
