Another test of an unmanned combine harvester was held in Russia

Another testing of an unmanned combine harvester took place in the village of Bessergenevskaya in the Rostov Region. The new machine was created by Rostselmash.

The combine harvester was tested during the "swath harvesting" operation entirely in unmanned mode with the setting of field boundaries.

In this case, the machine vision system is taken as a basis. This means that the vehicle sees the swath and follows its contours while avoiding any potential obstacles.

The high-precision navigation system functions as an auxiliary system and is used when computer vision is insufficient, for example, when turning at the end of a rut.

Developers point out that, more often than not, manufacturers choose only one set of sensors, such as machine vision, high-precision navigation or lidar, when creating an autodriving system.

Due to this, the machine becomes highly specialized and can be used only during agricultural works, where the selected options show their best qualities. So, for example, when harvesting crops from swaths or when controlling obstacles, machine vision technology is the best option. At the same time, high-precision navigation technology is the best when it comes to traditional harvesting methods, since it shows the best precision and performs turns and headlands precisely.

The hybrid control system of the drone, which was developed by Rostselmash, is adapted to any conditions and harvesting methods. It combines precision satellite navigation technology and computer vision, so the harvester knows the boundaries of the field and can follow the trajectory with an accuracy of up to 2.5 centimeters. At the same time, it can also see swaths and detect obstacles.

Windrow clearing tests have been underway for two months now. During this time, the specialists have become convinced of the reliability of the hybrid system. It will be available for preorder shortly.
