Russian Tu-160 broke the world record in terms of range

Supersonic strategic bombers Tu-160 have broken the world record for the range and duration of flight without landing for aircraft of this class, said the commander of long-range aviation of the Air Force Sergey Kobylash.

According to him, the military flew more than 25 hours, covering more than 20 thousand kilometers. He stressed that no one has ever flown in such a class before.

The Tu-160 has already broken the record in 2010 when the pilots spent 24 hours and 24 minutes in the air.

The bombers flew over the neutral waters of the central part of the Arctic and Pacific Oceans, the Kara Sea, the Laptev Sea, East Siberian, Chukchi and Barents Seas. The missile carriers took off and landed at the Engels airfield. The crews were commanded by Major General Oleg Pchela and Lieutenant Colonel Sergei Volkovitsky.

As told in the military department, during the flight the bombers refueled three times in the air from six IL-78s.

In addition, at some stages of the route they were accompanied by Su-35C fighters and aircraft of foreign countries.

The ministry stressed that the flight was conducted in strict compliance with the international rules of airspace use.
