Testing of a Russian full-genome DNA sequencer was completed

State tests of the first Russian full-genome DNA sequencer were successfully completed.

Tests were carried out at the All-Russian Research Institute of Metrology named after Mendeleev. Mendeleev All-Russian Scientific Research Institute of Metrology.

The hardware and software complex for DNA sequencing was developed by the Institute of Analytical Instrumentation of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS); the reagents for the complex were created by the scientific and production company Syntol.

The mass production of the device and reagents is planned to start next year on the basis of the experimental plant of scientific instrumentation of the Russian Academy of Sciences.

The appearance in Russia of their own equipment and reagents will make sequencing technologies more accessible and simultaneously allow medical and epidemiological research to reach a new level.

According to the scientists, the method of molecular colonies of DNA, which was created 30 years ago, was taken as a basis for the functioning of the device. Now this method has been implemented in the form of a domestic technology for mass parallel DNA sequencing.

The main technical difference of the developed complex is the unique and more sensitive optical detector compared to foreign analogues. Due to the know-how in the reagent kit, which implements the principle of sequencing through synthesis, a longer read length of the decrypted DNA sequences is ensured. This, as the developers emphasized, is particularly important, including in the field of personalized medicine.

Tests were held in several stages, and the final ones were decoding and assembling of DNA from a microorganism pathogenic for humans, Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The results of the work have indicated full compliance of the Russian complex, reagents and software for mass parallel DNA sequencing with the best foreign analogues.

In early September, the Head of the RF Ministry of Science and Higher Education held a meeting on establishment of a centre of high biomedical technologies in Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug.

He mentioned that the new research centre will appear in Surgut. Also, according to him, this infrastructure project is aimed at creation of innovation ecosystem of higher education, science and technological entrepreneurship.

The new facility will bring together over 200 scientists and engineers in various fields.
