Russia will launch a multimedia encyclopedia about the country's languages

The PostScience publishing house, together with scientists, will launch a new project. This is a multimedia encyclopedia about the languages used or still spoken by the various peoples of Russia.

According to the publishing house, there are more than 150 languages in the country, and taking into account dialects and dialects, this figure reaches about 300.

"Each of the languages of Russia, from those which are spoken by millions of people, to those which are on the verge of extinction, is a part of the cultural identity of the whole country", the press service of the project says.

In the new encyclopedia, each material will be dedicated to one of the languages. For example, there will be the information on its phonetics, lexicon, morphology, writing and phraseology. Besides, the readers will be able to learn the discoveries of the scientists, whose work is connected with languages.

Russian and foreign linguists, including native speakers of the languages described, will act as experts. They will not only share scientific data, but also tell real-life stories that are related to a particular language.

For example, there are a large number of ideophones in the Nivkh language. In other words, they are figurative words, but not only sound words like "knock-knock" or "zing", but they also describe smells or tactile sensations. For example, the word keurkeur means crunching of snow underfoot.

Scientific information will be accompanied by graphics and interactive tasks.

The organizers of the project launch this project in order to demonstrate the uniqueness and originality of each language and to remind the connection of the speakers of different languages in Russia.

An interactive map of the languages of our country has already been created and will be gradually updated with new data.
