State Duma approves law on beekeeping

The State Duma passed a law on beekeeping which defines the mechanisms of state support, establishes methods of the struggle against counterfeit products and ways to protect insects from pesticides.

According to the document, agricultural producers are obliged to inform the owners of apiaries and the population within the radius of 7 km about the use of pesticides or other chemicals for crop treatment at least three days in advance. This can be done by radio, newspapers, electronic and other means of communication. It is obligatory to specify the characteristics of the preparations, so that beekeepers know the exact period of isolation of bees.

Initially, the lawmakers wanted to completely ban the pesticides and agricultural chemicals of the first class for the treatment of plants pollinated by bees, but eventually decided to soften this requirement.

At the same time, the law prohibits the use of medicines for bees that are not registered with the state. Each apiary must have a veterinary and sanitary passport. Honey and products made of it may be produced and sold only in compliance with technical regulations. Now, the law prohibits individuals and companies to keep apiaries with non-tribal bees closer than 25 kilometers from breeding apiaries.

The document also prescribes a support mechanism for beekeepers by the state and local authorities.
