The Ukrainian authorities do not plan to buy gas directly from Russia, Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal has said.

"Our government has no intention to buy gas from Russia directly. Period," he said.

In 2019, Russia and Ukraine signed several agreements to continue gas transit through Ukraine to Europe, including a five-year transit contract. According to the document, Gazprom gives a guarantee to pump 65 billion cubic meters of gas in the first year and 40 billion each year thereafter.

Under the protocol on gas cooperation Gazprom and Naftogaz have the option to consider direct gas supplies to Ukraine at a discount from the European hub price depending on volumes, but no such negotiations have been reported so far.
