Russia ranked among the world's top 5 pork producers

Russia ranked among the world's top five pork producers last year. The country produced a total of 4.3 million tonnes in slaughter weight in 2020, such data were cited by Gazprombank's Center for Economic Forecasting (CEF).

As noted in the CEP, the modern Russian pork industry, which is only 15 years old, has reached a new level in the world. China, the US, Germany and Poland are ahead of the curve.

Until 2017, Russia purchased approximately 300,000 tons of pork from Brazil every year. After the discovery of African swine fever in Europe and the imposition of a food embargo, Brazil became the key supplier of this type of meat. Now pork imports to our country are practically zero, while exports are developing.

This year the national union of pork producers forecasts that pork production will increase to 4.5 million tons.

According to January data from Rosstat, production of livestock and poultry for slaughter on all farms increased by 3.1% in January and December compared to a year earlier to 15.6 million tonnes in live weight.
