Russia's "secret" exports fall due to pandemic

Exports of "classified" products, which include military equipment, weapons, aircraft and a number of nuclear materials, from Russia have declined amid the pandemic.

Last year, according to RBC, shipments of domestic goods hidden under the SSSS code in customs statistics decreased by almost 16% to $11.5 billion. In 2019, the figure stood at $13.6 billion.

In addition, exports of arms and ammunition decreased 2.4 times. This is evidenced by separate data from the Federal Customs Service. However, an increase of 35% (up to $3.8 billion) was recorded among trade abroad in civilian and military aircraft.

Algeria, China, India, and Egypt are the largest destinations for exports of domestic weapons, but military supplies have declined in the last three countries. Thus, last year Algeria became the leader (nearly $2 billion), having ousted Egypt from the first place.

Earlier, Russian Deputy Defense Minister Alexander Fomin said the country postponed arms supplies to several foreign customers because of the coronavirus.
