Russian trains carrying coal and timber pile up at the border with China

Congestion of Russian trains carrying timber and coal has formed on the country's border with China. China, according to media reports, has been delaying the receipt of cargo at land border crossings since last year due to the pandemic.

For example, in the last month the Russian Railways (RZD) has twice restricted the shipment of timber, coal and fertilizers to China through the border Zabaikalsk - Manchuria, RBC writes. Restrictions were imposed first from March 2 to 5, then from March 12 to 18.

Russian Railways has confirmed to the newspaper that China takes about 68% of the Russian trains with natural resources. So far, more than 70 trains with coal and timber have been jammed. The company also reported unjustified financial losses because of the situation.

According to the newspaper, the difficulties have been triggered by the fact that the Chinese regulatory authorities have increased the requirements for imports of timber products and coal: because of the pandemic, China now accepts goods mainly in containers.
