Pandemic-stricken business in Moscow increased revenue by 51%

Revenues of cafes and restaurants, hotels, travel agencies and other businesses in Moscow, particularly affected by the pandemic, increased by 51.7% over the five months of 2021 compared with the same period last year, reaching 1.6 trillion rubles, reported reporters in the complex of economic policy and property and land relations of the mayoralty of the capital.

"In January-May this year the revenues of Moscow industries which suffered most during the pandemic reached 1,62 trillion rubles. If in January, when there were several restrictions on the service sector, their turnover was 253.6 billion rubles, the result in May is 362 billion rubles - 43% higher than in January", - explained Deputy Mayor of Moscow Vladimir Efimov, whose words are given in the report.

He underlined, that the turnover of the enterprises, which suffered the most during the pandemic peak, is an important marker of the pace and level of the city's economic recovery. According to the Moscow Mayor's Office, in comparison with January-May 2020, the turnover of these sectors increased by 51,7%.

The entertainment industry was the leader in the rate of recovery, said Kirill Purtov, head of the city's Department of Economic Policy and Development. "The turnover of the entertainment sector added 52.4% over the first five months of this year compared to the same period in 2020. For the same period, the revenue of the sphere of household services to the population increased by 47.6%, catering enterprises - by 46.6%, hotels and travel agencies - by 28.7%," Purtov explained.

Overall, the revenue of small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in trade and services amounted to more than 1.6 trillion rubles, which is almost 40% higher than last year's figures from January to May, according to calculations by the Moscow Analytical Center.
