Experts from the Center for Technological Development at the St. Petersburg mill "Sveza" have developed a new computer program based on linear algebra methods to improve production planning and reduce raw material consumption rate.

"The St. Petersburg mill Sveza implements a special computer program to improve production planning and reduce raw material consumption rates. It calculates how much and what grades of veneer should be produced to fulfill incoming orders and also creates optimal cutting maps for plywood sheets when making non-standard sized products," the press service of the enterprise said.

It is noted that the previous planning system did not take into account the balance of available veneer at the mill in terms of grades, which regularly led to a shortage or surplus of its individual varieties.

"In addition, n.he new program makes it possible to form optimal cutting charts of plywood sheets for manufacturing products of non-standard sizes. Before its introduction the maps were calculated manually. This led to excessive formation of veneer trimming (the so-called strip) and, consequently, to the increased rate of consumption of raw materials. The new utility compares all incoming orders to the mill and generates optimal cutting maps based on mathematical modeling. This helps to minimize the number of cuttings," they explained there.
