Classic egg packaging in Russia has been included in the list of non-environmental products

The Russian environmental operator (REO) has included egg packaging made of polystyrene and polypropylene (pt) to the list of goods which may be banned in Russia. Pulperboard may become an alternative to these materials, the operator's press service said.

"Already now the share of packaging from pulpercarbon in Russia is about 70%. The rest falls primarily on egg packaging made of polystyrene foam. At the same time there is already enough capacity in Russia to fully cover the needs of the domestic market. Pulpercarbon production plants are not as complex and capital intensive as traditional paper production, so development and creation of such capacities is relatively quick in the case of market expansion," said the REO press service.

Poultry farms that operate packing stations designed to use polystyrene foam packaging will have to replace them, the REO explained. The transition can take place within two years, according to the operator.

As the REO underlined, the paperboard fully meets the principles of a closed cycle economy, because 100% of such packaging for eggs is made of waste paper. At the same time, the number of recycling cycles can reach 30, while processing of expanded polystyrene has proven to be economically inefficient. In addition, the cellulose from which the products subsequently used as recovered paper are produced is considered a renewable resource with an unlimited supply if forests are managed sustainably. It is biodegradable, non-toxic and has a zero carbon footprint even when burned.
