Rosatom started construction of the fifth NPP unit in India

State Corporation Rosatom started pouring the first concrete into the foundation slab of the reactor building of Unit 5 of the Kudankulam nuclear power plant in India.

The company reported that this work marked the official start of the main period of construction of the third stage of the nuclear power plant.

It is noted that due to coronavirus restrictions, the ceremony of pouring the first concrete was held via videoconference.

Rosatom CEO Alexei Likhachev stressed that the construction is a symbol of close cooperation between Russia and India. "Rosatom has all the advanced nuclear power technologies. Together with our Indian colleagues, we are ready to jointly deploy serial construction of Russian-designed state-of-the-art Generation 3+ nuclear power units at the new site in India. This is stipulated by the existing agreements," he said.

"Kudankulam is being built in southern India. The first and second units of the plant are already operational, while the third and fourth are under construction. On June 1, 2017, a framework agreement was signed for the construction of the fifth and sixth power units with VVER-1000 reactors.
