Rusprodsoyuz: banana prices in stores are already going down

Banana prices in Russian supermarkets have started to go down, Deputy Chairman of Rusprodsoyuz Dmitry Leonov told the Made in Russia project.

Earlier it was reported that the cost of bananas in Russian stores returned to the level of 2016, reaching the maximum cost in five years. Such data was given by Rosstat.

"At the moment, the prices of bananas in wholesale are decreasing. The banana market today is characterized by a seasonal decline in demand. Under such conditions, importers are lowering prices for these fruits, trying to increase the rate of sales in this segment. So, at the moment bananas are offered for sale at 60-86 rubles per kilogram", - said Leonov to the project.

According to his words the prices will keep falling due to the wholesale dynamics and increase of the offer of seasonal fruits. However, Rusprodsoyuz has not observed any disruptions in the supply of fruit, but notes that earlier, according to the results of a fan study of organic products in Ecuadorian bananas "100% organic bananas" of TM Prima Donna, insecticide chlorpyrifos was found at a concentration of 0.029 milligram per kilogram.

"They were labelled with the EU organic label, Eurolist, and the certificate was issued by the European body Control Union Certifications. Despite the low concentration, this is a violation, because in products that are certified as organic, even the minimum content of pesticides is unacceptable," he stressed.

Leonov noticed that such products can't pass organic certification and get the Russian Quality Label.

CITRUS IS GETTING CHEAPER TOO

As for the changes in the trade of other exotic fruits, the Rosprodsoyuz notes the decline in prices, including citrus fruits. Thus, according to Leonov, because of the low demand for oranges there is a downward price trend at the level of 54-89 rubles per kilogram. Despite the reduction of supplies, the wholesale prices of mandarins also prevails, which is a consequence of low demand: for example, the cost of mandarins, which are imported mainly from South Africa (South Africa), Argentina and Morocco, ranging from 75 to 130 rubles per 1 kilogram.

"Prices for lemons are relatively stable. Given the low sales rates, the sales of lemons are in the range of 75-131 rubles per kilogram. The main suppliers of this fruit are South Africa, Argentina and Turkey. Grapefruit prices are also stable. They are sold in the price range of 90-135 roubles per kilo," he added.
