Scientists of the National Medical Research Center of Phthisiopulmonology and Infectious Diseases of the Ministry of Health have developed a technology for the treatment of chronic hepatitis B, RIA Novosti reported referring to the center.

This is a pharmaceutical substance based on the technology of site-directed protein nucleases, explained at the center. They are capable of destroying more than 99% of viral genomes in infected cells within a few days. Such a development has been created for the first time in the world.

The new substance is non-toxic and safe. In the future, a drug based on it will be created.

According to the publication, today in the world there are over 250 million people with chronic hepatitis B, with over one million deaths a year.
