China became the largest importer of Russian beef

China has overtaken Vietnam in beef imports from Russia and has become the largest buyer of this meat from the Russian Federation, according to the quarterly report of Rosselkhozbank's Center for Industry Expertise (CEE).

Thus, according to the results of the first three months of the current year, export of beef to China has increased 20-fold, and the share of the country in the total volume of domestic supplies of this type of meat exceeded 55%. Saudi Arabia and Kazakhstan are also among the top three importers.

In the first three months of 2021, China topped the list of the largest importers of beef from Russia, displacing Vietnam, which was the leader of the ranking last year, from the top three.

"Shipments to Asia's largest market increased more than 20 times year-on-year from 179 tonnes in January-March 2020 to 3.66 thousand tonnes in 2021. Exports of domestic beef in the same period increased 2.5 times from 2.6 thousand tons in the first quarter of 2020 to 6.5 thousand tons in 2021," it follows.

The need to compensate for the drop in domestic pork production due to the outbreak of African swine fever in pre-crisis 2018-2019 has opened the PRC market to foreign meat producers, as explained by COE head Andrei Dalnov.

Over the years before and last year, China has multiplied its meat imports into the country, with beef imports doubling from 2018, poultry imports tripling to 1.5 million tons and pork imports increasing 2.6 times to 5.7 million tons.

"The high export growth rate in the first quarter of this year is explained by both the low-base effect and the competitive price, which ensures that Russian beef is popular among Chinese consumers," the head of the center specified.
