A bill to suppress the sale of animals in pet shops has been submitted to the State Duma

A bill banning the trade of animals in pet shops and bird markets has been submitted for consideration to the Russian State Duma (Duma). The idea was initiated by Vladimir Burmatov, head of the Duma Committee on Ecology and Environmental Protection, writes TASS.

Amendments are proposed to the law on the responsible treatment of animals. Burmatov proposes to legislate that the places used for the sale of animals should meet the requirements established by an authorized federal executive body. As the deputy previously explained, the establishment of requirements for places for the sale of animals would effectively mean a ban on such trade in pet stores and poultry markets, where animals are kept "in abominable conditions".

Today, in Russia there are no established requirements for places where animals are sold, and as a result, in pet stores and markets they are kept "in cramped conditions, without proper veterinary care and assistance, deprived of normal food, the opportunity to walk and socialize, with violations of sanitary norms," the deputy explained.
